A Win-Win for Owls and Agriculture: Sakata Seed Southern Africa Partners with EcoSolutions Urban Ecology

Sakata Seed Southern Africa has taken a remarkable step towards environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture. By collaborating with owlproject.org, specifically EcoSolutions Urban Ecology, Sakata has become a temporary home for rescued barn owls.

In 2020, Sakata partnered with EcoSolutions to enhance their environmental efforts. EcoSolutions installed 8 owl boxes and 12 perches at Sakata’s facilities in Lanseria, Johannesburg. Since then, Sakata has remained committed to accommodating barn owls, as they naturally occur in the area and their population has significantly declined in recent years. The strategic location of Sakata’s facility makes it an ideal site for barn owl relocation. Sakata accommodates 2 to 3 owls twice a year.

These owls play a vital role in controlling rodents, a common challenge faced by agricultural enterprises. By providing a sanctuary for the owls and incorporating them into our environment, Sakata not only ensures their well-being but also effectively addresses the rodent issues that commonly arise on farms.

On Friday, 14 July 2023, EcoSolutions Urban Ecology arrived at Sakata’s facilities with two young barn owls. These owlets were rescued from the roof of a family home, they had found temporary refuge. Sakata has offered to be the nurturing haven for these owls over the next few weeks, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the farm’s environment and facilitating their adjustment process.

Throughout their stay, Sakata’s caring and dedicated employees will be responsible for feeding and ensuring the well-being of the barn owls. Each owl is provided with three chicks once a day. After a period of three weeks, the owls are released before sunrise. Even after their release, Sakata continues to offer fresh food for three days in case the owls choose to return to the owl box in search of food.

Sakata Seeds hopes to set an inspiring example for the agricultural industry in terms of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship, showcasing how businesses can actively contribute to ecological conservation. As the barn owls take flight into their newfound home, Sakata’s commitment to environmental welfare and responsible farming practices shines as a beacon of hope for a brighter, greener future.
