SAKATA AT FAIR PLANET ETHIOPIA OPEN DAY

Mar 31, 2023 | General

Fair Planet is a Non-profit organisation which focuses on increasing food security and to provide new economic opportunities for the millions of people living in poverty in mainly Ethiopia and Tanzania. Fair Planet’s mission is to bridge the current gap between existing high quality seed varieties developed by leading seed companies and transfer technologies and know-how to smallholder farmers in Africa.

On the 28th and 29th of March 2023, Fair Planet hosted an Open Day at Tony Farm at the University of Haramaya, in Dire dawa, Northern Ethiopia. On this farm, Fair Planet has grown screening trials of varieties vegetable crops to showcase to the public.

The region is hot and dry, thus, crops such as tomatoes, peppers and cucurbits are best suited to the environment. With daily temperatures around 35+ ˚C, it is a punishing climate and only the best suited varieties flourish.

Sakata Seed Southern Africa trialled and displayed various tomato varieties at the Open Day. The variety which stood out most from the Sakata Seed range was F1 Hybrid Buena Vista, a determinate saladette tomato which produced large firm fruits with healthy and strong plants.

The event was attended by more than 100 farmers, interested parties from Dire Dawa and the University, as well as the local government administration and other participants in the Fair Planet scheme.

Sakata looks forward to continuing to trial and develop high quality varieties for these regions to ensure success in Fair Planet’s mission to increase food security for Ethiopia and Tanzania.
