CAPRICORN ONIONS – THE LIMPOPO HERO

Jun 6, 2022 | General

The onion market is one of the most competitive markets in South Africa. Prices on the markets are directly influenced by the volume of onions delivered from commercial farms to the fresh markets. Producers aim to deliver fresh onions in April/May to the markets since this is the time when onion stock are low and prices are high.

To achieve this, a very specific sowing slot in Limpopo was identified by Sakata. Producers in Limpopo can sow our 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗡 variety from November to mid-December and are able to deliver fresh onions to the markets by the months April or May. With input costs increasing annually, planning ahead is absolutely critical to obtain optimal revenue for your crop. Capricorn has the potential to give you a yield of up to 80 tons per hectare if the correct production guidelines are followed.
