A group of top melon producers and traders from Spain visited Sakata Seed Southern Africa at the end of January 2016. The producers visited South Africa to determine if it will be viable to produce Piel de Sapo melons within South Africa as a counter season production area in order to supply the European market.
Several of South African melon growers were visited in the Eastern and Western Cape to study the climate and also the quality of the melons produced in these areas. Overall, the trip was a huge success and further trials will be done to establish the viability of exporting Piel de Sapo melons from South Africa to Europe.
Piel de Sapo sweet melon is still new to the South African market. The melon has a rough green skin with white internal flesh. The eating quality of these melons is excellent because of the very high sugar content and unbeatable flavour.
