In celebration of Women’s Day today we would like to feature one of our female growers of whom we are very proud. Greet Tijssen is a vegetable farmer based on the outskirts of Gauteng. The crops that she produces on the farm includes cucumbers, peppers, lettuce and various brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli). She farms on an area of just over 50 hectares, of which 3 hectares are multispan structures and 6 hectares are under nethouse structures. She has her own nursery setup, and the rest of the farm is open field production areas. Greet has been farming on her own since 2013, and she has been expanding her business ever since. When asked what advice she can give to upcoming female farmers, she very gently answers: “You should never underestimate yourself. There is an unfortunate stigma about men being better farmers, but as a female you have the advantage of a very sharp 6th sense. Trust this sense! Take calculated risks and grow from mistakes.” Greet always makes informed decisions about expanding her setup, even though her way isn’t always the trusted norm. Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone on a daily basis and showing us that that is where the magic happens Greet. We here at Sakata are very proud of you and what you’ve achieved. Keep on going forward!
