Selecting crops to be grown in winter is not always as easy as it seems. The harsh conditions that come with the cooler season makes it difficult for certain crops to survive. Luckily there are crops specifically suited to colder weather production, like brassicas. One of these brassicas that thrive in year-round conditions is Red Rookie. Not only is the brilliant glossy purple colour a feast for the eyes, the variety also has an excellent field holding ability and cold tolerance. Red Rookie is used for baby cabbage production, but can also be grown for medium (pre-pack) cabbages, easily reaching a weight of 1,5kg to 2,5kg. On these photos, Hendri van der Walt from DerWalt Boerdery in Brits can be seen with some of the produce grown on his farm. He supplies the Fresh Market and is very happy with the result from his winter crop. Thank you for your dedication to our countries food security Hendri – may you have a prosperous new season.
