The region known as the Koue Bokkeveld in Western Cape, South Africa, is located 1800 meters above sea level with snow and daily low temperatures during winter. It is important for this region to plant using seedlings since germination, emergence and the growth of the onion seeds will be too slow when sowed directly during winter months. Although snow can still be present on the mountain ranges until late September, we can rest assured that onions are tough at seedling stage and can handle temperatures below zero.
Onion seedlings of 6 – 8 weeks transplanted in September can be harvested during December. Seedlings are transplanted by hand in evenly spaced holes made by a metal roller specifically designed for onion transplants.
The region is known for exceptional quality onions with tough brown tunics, firm bulbs and a storage ability of 6 months.
