Broccoli, Parthenon has taken the international market by storm and this includes South Africa! This picture shows Parthenon being harvested in the beautiful Eastern Cape region of our country. Parthenon is a very adaptable variety that can be planted all year round in some areas. The variety is very versatile, in the sense that it can be used as a pre-packer, processor and freezing variety. Parthenon has a very high yield potential with good quality heads that don’t fall open when they become too big. The heads are smooth with a dark green colour and small beads. The plant has a big root system that needs less nitrogen compared to other broccoli varieties. The heads sit deep into the plant that protects them against wind, rain and sun damage.
Parthenon is one of Sakata’s ‘new generation’ broccoli’s created as a result of extensive research and breeding programmes. Parthenon has achieved a new level of quality with its exceptional characteristics and versatility. It is for these reasons that Parthenon is steadily capturing not only the European, but also the American broccoli market and creating much interest within South Africa.
